The Hikers Buddy Verdict

The Jetboil Stash is an excellent choice for thru hikers, backpackers, and those trying to cut the weight of their packs. At a list price of $135, it's the most expensive of the Jetboil's unregulated ‘fast boil’ stoves - but that’s not to say the Stash is bad value - far from it. It is impressively lightweight, tipping the scales at just 201 grams, including the 0.8L capacity cooking pot. Despite cutting down on weight, it maintains excellent performance, bringing 0.5 L of water to a boil in 150 seconds under ideal conditions.

Another valuable perk of the Stash is that (unlike the integrated Zip and Flash), it is compatible with larger pots without the need to purchase and carry a seperate pot support, which adds a level of higher level of out-of-the box versatility to this lightweight little stove.

The Stash does lack some of the nice-to-have features of the cheaper Flash, such as the push button igniter, insulated sleeve and 'thermochromatic' boiling indicator. But if you’re in the prioritising weight above all else, then the Stash may be the perfect choice for you.

Who Should Buy It

Thru hikers, multi-day backpackers, and ultra-light enthusiasts: The Jetboil Stash is a great option for those who are keen to cut the weight of their packs. It is a truly lightweight and compact system; as long as you’re willing to sacrifice on a few non-vital features, and don’t mind being limited in cooking options by the lack of fine heat output control, this will be a great choice of stove.

Who Shouldn’t Buy It

Cold weather campers: Similar to the Zip and Flash, the Jetboil Stash is an unregulated stove. This means you should rule it out if your adventures will be taking place in the snow, or any temperatures approaching freezing. At these extremes, unregulated stoves are not reliable, and may not function effectively. If you’re looking for a lightweight regulated, integrated system, the Jetboil MicroMo may be a good choice. Those that value varied meal options: The Stash doesn’t provide fine grained control of the heat output of the stove; it is really just designed to boil water as fast as possible, to use in things like dehydrated meals and hot drinks. This makes it difficult to cook more complex food in these stoves; you’ll likely end up heavily charring the food at the bottom of the cooking cup. If this is important to you, you may be better off opting for something like the MiniMo, though you will incur a weight penalty.
